How my Hungarians managed to lose 2 out of 3 games on their first try out.

For more detailed close ups of my troops see this page on the WABforum.

First game

Second game right flank
  Second game left flank

The first game against the Archian Franks commanded by Chris Stone.

Chris's army consisted of 3 units of knights, a unit of light cavalry, a unit of archers and 2 mounted heroes. In this game I used 2 war wagons, a gun, a unit of knights, a unit of spearmen and a unit of light cavalry.

Chris had a simple tactic, one unit of knights on each side of the table and the other down the middle to capture the objective (which was the object of this game). The objective was a cart in the middle of a field, surrounded by stone walls, so almost impossible for any of my army to get there. The gun could not see past the walls so never got a shot in all game.

I met the knights on my right (Chris's left) which is the bottom of the picture and destroyed them. However that was my only victory and did not make up for my losses. In the centre a unit of knights boldly entered the field and captured the cart. Slow going it might have been but with a 2+ save and no one getting any rank bonus, these guys were ideal to capture the cart.

On my left a unit of knights, the heroes and light cavalry swept round. The heroes killed a war wagon all onl their own, the spearmen then tested for the destroyed war wagon and routed off the field. Leaving the gun to meet its maker.

Second game vs Wayne Richards Tuetonics.

With both of us using our full armies, I added 4 units of crossbows, 2 more guns, a unit of dismounted knights and 2 units of skirmishing archers to my army. Wayne had 2 large units of spearmen, wearing partial plate armour and stubborn. That and his own gun, a couple of units of xbow and two units of knights.

Wayne split his army into two (as did I) because of the large house in the middle of the table. His spearmen and a unit of knights attacked on my left and another unit of knights supported by xbows attacked on my right. Now I had decided to attck on my right (and get rid of that damn gun) and hold on my left.

Above you see the situation on my right. (1)My knights have attacked his knights and the archers have surrounded the enemy knights so that if they are defeated they have no where to run to. I have only done this once before and this time like then it worked brillantly. (2)The dismounted knights along with my Army Standard Bearer hit a unit of xbows and destroyed them. (3) And eventually the other unit of xbows was destroyed.

On my left, his plan worked well. A unit of knights destroyed a war wagon and then went on to charge a gun. However I kept on shooting at them until there were none left.

But the spearmen had been moving toward me and eventually charged my own spears on top of the hill. They of course lost the melee and ran off the table, once again.

A slight victory for me although the losses in my army were far more than I would have wished. That damn house got in the way.

Third game left flank   third game from enemy side of the table

Third game against Duncan McFarlanes Albanians.

Duncan had only a 1000 points of troops against my 1500 but he still managed to beat me. My army was the same as in the first game. The Albanians had a unit of light horsemen, two formed units of horse and 2 units of light infantry archers.

One of the units of light infantry archers entered the house, which I then spent the rest of the game trying to blow up with my cannon, to no effect. The other unit of archers went up the hill, were attacked by my knights and destoyed. However they were shot at all the way and eventually were all kill. Just leaving the general and army standard, who broke and ran.

With shooting from my war wagons I was able to destroy one of his units of formed cavalry and the Albanian skirmishing cavalry were also down to 5 models. But their morale held and this is the situation at the end of the game.

The Albanians have a unit of archers in the house, a unit of formed cavalry left, half of the horse archers on top of the hill.

I had both my war wagons, the spearmen, my unit of skirmishing cavalry and my general and army standard. I had only lost the knights but unfortunately they were a very expensive unit.
